Today I cheated—twice. I was in the mood to write but felt no inspiration, so I created a “spin the wheel” of prompts. I didn’t like the first two at all, so I settled on the third.
Write a letter from your future self in June
thanking you for something you started in March.
Dear Self,
I love perusing your journal, reading your prayers, and rejoicing in the moments God met with you.
We’re almost at the half-year mark, and as I looked at your goals for the year, I celebrated with you that you’ve already crossed several things off of the list. I know you and your obsession with crossing things off. My first instinct was to say, “Thank you, simply, for starting.” But as I thought about it, I wanted to thank you for something different, something longer-lasting.
In your life with so little margin, thank you for walking away from your computer to snuggle with your kids when they asked for it. Thank you for giving up a few moments of work to dribble a basketball with your son in the garage. Thank you for the moments you prayed when you didn’t feel like it. Thank you for doing something you said you would never do—homeschool. What a sweet year it was! You will never regret these decisions.
Now that it’s summer, don’t lose momentum. Keep pushing toward your goals, but don’t forget the most important things in life. You’ll be glad you didn’t.
Sincerely,
Future Self
I always set birthday goals rather than New Year Resolutions. I thoughtfully and prayerfully ask myself and God, “What do I want to accomplish in this year of my life?” Every year looks a little different, but here’s a glimpse of this year’s categories: Family Goals, Spiritual Goals, Music Goals, Ministry Goals, Hobby Goals, and Physical Goals. I also added “One Day Goals”— things I’d like to pursue in another season but can start thinking about now.
What about you? What has God put in your heart to do this year? How would you like to change? What would you like to accomplish?
Now, it’s your turn. I challenge you. Write a letter (literally or mentally) from your future self in June to now. What would you thank yourself for or what should you change now so that you can thank yourself for?
To all my readers…Happy March!
